This is becoming one of my fave places to eat Thai food in town area. I keep ordering the same thing- Laos Style Curry, Hot with brown rice. The flavors are awesome. Sometimes the heat level is not the same. One week, the spicy seemed like mild/ medium, and the next week, the spicy was back up to spicy. Either way, it was still delicious.
Note, for those who like brown jasmine rice, or the usual brown jasmine and red cargo rice that Thai places usually serve- none of that here. Its just plain brown rice.
Speaking of, the side orders of rice aren't a large amount. Some people might have a problem with this. I wished it were more at first, but then I figured, I don't need to be eating so much rice anyways, so its fine.
When picking up take-out, a coworker asked me to ask if it was possible to get a small sample of the panang curry sauce, so she could see if she would like it. She doesn't like panang that is very thick and overly peanut-buttery, and wouldn't want to waste money if that's how they make theirs. Unfortunately, the answer I got was no, because each order is made to order. Which made me bummed for my coworker but personally I was happy to hear, because I love places that make your food fresh, not serve you food that's been sitting under a heat lamp for several hours! -

My friends and I decided to give Thai Village in City Square Dillingham a try last night and I have to say I'm surprised by the reviews. Maybe we just didn't order the right things. The menu is pretty big, so there has to be some things they're better at than others.
I ordered the pad see ew with chicken. The menu describes it as "big fat noodles stir-fried with egg, broccoli, and sweet-sour soy sauce". Then you have your normal options of protein. There was barely any broccoli in there, and what broccoli were scrawny and limp. The chicken was dry and overcooked...and I couldn't tell if there was any egg in there as it was also dry and overcooked (how do you mess up on egg?). It took a while to distinguish the egg from the chicken. Needless to say I won't be ordering this again..not from here anyway.
One of my friends got the curry noodle, which was okay, but I felt like it was lacking complexity in its flavor. One thing I LOVE about South East Asian cooking or maybe Asian cooking as a whole, is the complexity of the flavors. The curry noodle tasted like it was trying to mimic laksa but didn't have all the spices needed.
My friends seemed to somewhat enjoy the spring rolls (I say somewhat because if you are loving the spring rolls, that's usually the first thing you finish because who doesn't love spring rolls???), but interestingly commented that the spring roll sauce didn't taste like it had any fish sauce. It was completely clear...first time I've seen that.
Another thing I wanted to mention.. is that the menu mentions 18% gratuity for parties of 6 or more. I was a little disappointed that she charged us that (not saying that I wouldn't have given her 18% or more even because service was good..food was meh to me but that's not on her and it was only one server working). We entered with 5 people, but my friend's daughter wasn't eating. She was obviously playing on my friend's phone the entire time. And our friend popped in to join us for a Thai iced tea about 20 minutes before we left. So I guess at last count we did have 6 people at the table but Idk if I would have charged 18% gratuity if it was me. She likely could have gotten a higher tip otherwise because a lot of us didn't have change. Oh wells! -

Picture it. You're in the middle of the Kalihi business district on a Sunday after church, where your stomach's hungry grumblings almost took you to the point of that familiar feeling of embarrassment.
Your friends turn to you because you are their designated foodie. They want you to name names. The gears in your brain begin to start turning out of their rusty slumber. Then you tell everyone there's a great seafood place nearby! Nope, one of them says her little girl doesn't like seafood and would prefer a keiki menu.
Hmm, the gears keep turning. Oh, what about that other place just a few minutes away? Nope, that won't work either. So much for my foodie status. Eureka! What about that little Thai place in City Square? Jackpot! Yes, the little one loves Thai. Who knew?
There was a short wait but we were seated relatively promptly considering there was quite the crowd brewing. We ordered the Pad Thai with tofu, which was not bad. It was flavored well enough, but not as good as some others I've had. My friend ordered Shrimp rolls, and even with my possible shrimp allergy I sampled one. It was deep-fried perfection, with just the right amount of crispy goodness.
The Vegetarian Spring Rolls were tasty, but again not as good as others I've had. And no Thai meal is complete without some curry, so we thought we couldn't go wrong with Green Curry with chicken. It was mild and tasty, I'd probably order it again. Portion sizes were good for the price, and service was great. I'd go back to check out some of their other dishes. There's free parking in the City Square lot. -

Had an early dinner with my son this afternoon (little after 5pm) since we now both work nearby. This restaurant is like our 'go-to' Thai restaurant.
Since he was on some kind of keto diet and didn't want to eat rice, I also did not order rice. We decided on the item #1 fried summer rolls @$9.95, the #46 Pad Kee Mow (w/beef) - hot, and the #38 Panang Curry (w/chicken) which we ordered as 'Thai Hot' (these two entrees cost $11.95 each).
The woman is that same individual who has serviced us the other times we come here just after work...she's the host, the waitress, the busser, and the cashier. As the restaurant seating is rectangular in shape she has a good birds-eye view of every table from the cash register area.
First out (in about 4 minutes) were the spring rolls (6 total /half the size of a regular long roll with lettuce for wraps, cucumber, a little shredded cabbage, a few mint leaves ..very tasty...the spring roll sauce...don't what it is, but tasted like a teri burger being chomped on...very good taste, but of course, it can't be teriyaki sauce...can't put our finger on it. Within 4-5 minutes, our two entrees came out. Ohh, are they good !...the panang curry (w/chicken), I just like to leave it in my mouth for a while before finally swallowing it, it is that delicious in taste. The Pad Kee Mow didn't taste hot to me...though read the next sentence.
I think we have become immune to 'Thai Hot' to the point that when she took our plates away, I told her how delicious the panang curry was and that the Thai Hot was 'not hot enough'. Or should I have not said that? wonder if we tell her If there is anything hotter than that (since the 3 levels are: medium, hot and Thai Hot) the next time we may regret it the next morning as we sit on the john shooting missiles !
Really not a good thing to be eating when I have acid reflux, but YOLO!
I love this place ! -

Decided on Thai Village as a alternate dining destination since Utage was packed on a Friday evening. This is not our first visit but it's been a while since we've had their food.
Interior is clean and decor is minimalist in a good way. Service was quick and server was pleasant. Long rice salad with chicken was a new dish for us and the salad was dressed with a tart lime sauce that perked up our appetite. Fish patties were spot on- fresh tasting with a mix of long bean and other veggies enhancing the fish cake. I'm a green curry fan and their version was not as thick as some other local Thai restaurants. Thai Village's version is closer to the curry we had in Bangkok. Beef larb was fine and met our expectations. We found it easier to layer the minced beef on the lettuce rather than the thin wedges of cabbage provided. Just a personal preference. We also order sticky rice for the green curry. Overall a tasty, affordable dinner in a pleasant dining room. Check out my photos.
